by October 3rd, 2017

About 300 girls have already been given the  HPV vaccine, since  the initiative was launched, yesterday (Oct 2).

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton made the revelation in parliament this afternoon (Oct 3).

The HPV vaccine initiative, is intended to help prevent cervical cancer.

The vaccine is being given to girls in grade 7 or first form.

There has been public concern about the decision by the government to administer the vaccine to school girls, and the Opposition PNP has chastised the Government for not adequately informing parents about the initiative.

Speaking in parliament today, Dr. Tufton reiterated that the vaccine is safe, with minimal side effects.

He restated that the vaccination is not mandatory, as parents are given a form which indicates an ‘opt out’ choice.

He said female students at 4 schools were given the vaccine, yesterday.

Meantime, Dr. Tufton said he is aware that many people still have concerns about the vaccine.

He is inviting those persons to contact the Health Ministry’s toll free line 1-888-one love or 1-888-663-5683.
