6 killed in separate accidents across the island on Independence holiday

Six people were killed in three separate road crashes across the island, yesterday (August 6).

The accidents occurred in Manchester, Clarendon and St. Elizabeth.

In the latest incident in Manchester, three persons were killed.

The deceased are 33-year-old Safari Phillips, 36-year-old Sanjay Caine and 14-year-old Shajinah Caine.

Reports are that at about 5:20pm, Sanjay was driving a Toyota Isis motor car along the Downes Main Road, when it collided with a Honda motorcar, that was being driven in the opposite direction.

All three occupants of the Toyota Motor car received injuries and were taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Over in Clarendon, an unidentified man was killed along the Clarendon Park Main road.

Reports are that at about 3:50pm, the driver of a Toyota Probox lost control of the vehicle and it collided with a motor truck, which was parked alongside the main road.

The occupants were taken to the May Pen Hospital, where one male passenger succumbed to his injuries.

And in St. Elizabeth, two males were killed when the motorcycle on which they were travelling collided with a Toyota motor truck.

The deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Ojay Rowe and 14-year-old Nathan Witter.

Reports are that at about 2:30pm, both vehicles were being driven in opposite directions on the Leaseland Main Road, when they collided.

Rowe and Witter were pronounced dead at hospital.

The 6 deaths have pushed the number of road fatalities since the start of the year to 290.

Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones says the council is extremely concerned about the fatalities.

He told Irie Fm News that the council remains committed to reducing the number of road deaths.
