Romelda Aiken powers Firebirds to derby win against Lightning

Former champions Queensland Firebirds, thanks to Romelda Aiken’s game high 39 goals from 45 attempts, battled to a hard-fought 55-52 win over title-holders Sunshine Coast Lightning in a hotly contested derby as second round action continued in the Suncorp Super Netball League in Australia.

The Firebirds, who were beating the Lightning for the first time, are up to 4th on 8 points after recording a win and a loss in their opening two games.

Meanwhile Aiken leads the league in offensive rebounds with 10 and is second on the goal-scoring chart with 84.

Jamaican teammate Jhaniele Fowler-Reid leads the way with 128 after draining 62 goals to push early leaders West Coast Fever to a 68-57 win over the Magpies Netball Club on Saturday.

Play on Sunday also saw Kadie-Ann Dehaney featuring for the undefeated Melbourne Vixens who moved to third on 12 points after posting a close 63-61 win over the NSW Swifts.
