Samuda: new CMU council to be named soon

by January 21st, 2020

The new council for the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) is expected to be named in a few days, as part of efforts to mitigate the fallout from allegations about operations at the institution, and the resignation of current council members.

Minister with responsibility for education Karl Samuda gave an update on the issue in parliament this afternoon.

Mr. Samuda said following recent discussions with officials at the CMU it was determined that some changes were required.

All but one member of the CMU council has resigned.

Mr. Samuda also sought to assure that, contrary to media reports, the CMU is not facing any management challenge.

He said over the past few months several measures have been put in place to better monitor the maritime university.

He added that Prime Minister Andrew Holness is expected to give a more detailed report on the CMU by Friday.

The statement by Samuda was rubbished by opposition spokesman on education Peter Bunting.
