Windies U-19’s suffer narrow loss to New Zealand in World Cup quarterfinals

The West Indies Under-19’s came up short in their bid to secure a place in the semi-finals at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa after suffering a narrow 2 wickets loss to New Zealand.

Batting first the young Windies got off to a fast start but suffered a middle order collapse and were eventually dismissed for 238 in 47.5 overs.

Jamaican Kirk McKenzie was the leading scorer but just missed out on a century after he was dismissed on 99.

Mckenzie slammed 11 fours and 3 sixes before he was last man out for the Windies after he had earlier retired hurt due to cramps while in cruise control on 99, but returned to the pitch with the Kimani Melius led team slumping from a comfortable position of 184 for 3 after losing 6 wickets in quick succession.

Kevlon Anderson (33) and Antonio Morris (31) were the other leading contributors.

Man of the Match Kristian Clarke was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, bagging 4 for 25 in 7.5 overs.

He returned to crack an unbeaten 46 from 42 balls to lift New Zealand to victory at 239 for 8 after they recovered from 153 for 8 in the 34th over.

Clarke also shared in a record 9th wicket stand of 86 with Joey Field who ended not out on 38.

Ashmead Nedd (3-33) led the Windies bowlers while there was 2 wickets each for Joshua James and Mathew Forde.

Final scores West Indies 238, New Zealand 239 for 8.
