Quarantined person moved into isolation due to elevated temperature

by February 10th, 2020

One person, a Jamaican who had been quarantined after returning from China, has been moved into isolation due to an elevated temperature.

This was disclosed by Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton at a press conference a short while ago.

He says this is the first time symptoms have been detected in a person being monitored.

He said the elevated temperature was detected this morning.

Persons have either been isolated or quarantined as the ministry moves to keep the corona virus out of Jamaica.

Dr. Tufon says the ministry will be closely monitoring the patient for any further development.

Dr. Tufton says between January 23 and Saturday February 8, 116 persons arrived in Jamaica who had been in China 14 days prior to arrival here.

He said one person had mild symptoms and was immediately isolated.

That person’s symptoms have since improved.

Of the 115 remaining, 27 were not landed, 78 have been assessed as having low risk and have been quarantined at home for follow-up with the local health departments.

10 persons, up to yesterday February 9, were in quarantine in facilities operated by the ministry of health.

Meantime, the health minister says he will be meeting with residents who have expressed concerned about the designation of a section of St. Joseph’s hospital for quarantine.

The residents have protested against this development.
