Dr urges residents to protect against Zika Virus

by June 21st, 2015

Chief Medical Officer at the St. Elizabeth Health Department, Dr. Tonia Dawkins-Beharie is urging individuals living in St. Elizabeth to protect themselves and destroy mosquito-breeding sites

Dr. Dawkins-Beharie says in light of a possible spread of the Zika Virus, which is transmitted by the Aedes Egypti mosquitoes, the health department is currently engaged in intensified vector control activities across the parish.

She says some of the strategies apart from source reduction they are working on, is to reactivate some trained community volunteers to help get the message out across the parish.

She explains that the Zika Virus, like most viral infections presents non-specific symptoms and globally they have not seen any reports of fatality associated with the Zika Virus, but says they still have to be alert.
