by March 9th, 2020

Angus Arthur made history on Sunday, becoming the first wrestler from Jamaica to win a Pan American Championships gold medal, winning the 92 kg men’s freestyle weight class.

While there were only two people registered at 92 kg, Arthur impressed in his finals match, dominating Costa Rican opponent Maxwell Lacey Garita 13-1, using high-powered offense to snag the gold.

Arthur winning also meant Jamaica secured an historic first ever gold medal at an international wrestling event.

There was also success for the other Jamaican at the event, Lesyan Cousin, who copped the bronze medal in the men’s 87 kilogram Greco-Wrestling competition.

The other men’s freestyle gold medal went to Jason Nolf (USA), who went 2-0 in round-robin action. He began the day with a 10-0 tech fall over Guseyn Ruslanzada (CAN), and won his second bout by injury default against Victor Hernandez Luna (MEX).

Arthur, meanwhile, now looks ahead to the Pan-American Olympic Qualification Tournament which is scheduled to run from March 13-15, also in Ottawa, Canada.
