Coronavirus threatens major festivals

by March 10th, 2020

Jamaica has confirmed its first Coronavirus case in Kingston on Tuesday, and Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton is discouraging public gatherings.

Minister Tufton during the press briefing, revealed that the patient is a Jamaican female who had travelled from the United Kingdom, which has cases of COVID-19. She arrived on the island on March 4, presented to the public health system on March 9 and has been in isolation since then.

Minister Tufton also said there’s a ban on travel, to and from France, Spain, and Germany, in addition to China, Italy, South Korea, Singapore, and Iran.

Meanwhile, the threat of the coronavirus is raising concerns ahead of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, one of the world’s most popular music festivals.

New details are that talks are in the pipeline between Coachella and Stagecoach to move the event to October due to the Coronavirus. Though it’s not a done deal, organizers say a decision will be made in about 48 hours if the festivals can be saved from cancellation.

Petitions both for and against the cancellation of Coachella remains on change.org, a website where users can start issue-oriented campaigns.

A petition calling for the cancellation of Coachella appeared last Tuesday and has received more than 18,000 signatures as of news time.

However, not everyone agrees with the campaign to cancel Coachella. There is also a petition dubbed Do Not Cancel Coachella on change.org, which has garnered over 4,000 signatures and counting.

If all goes well, Grammy-kid Koffee will make her debut on the 2020 staging of Coachella which will see her perform on April 11 and 18.
