by June 17th, 2020

Jamaican artistic director and prominent creative dancer, Dr. L’Antoinette Stines has filed a lawsuit against megastars Beyonce and Jay-Z.

The founder of the LACADCO dance group, claims she is yet to be duly compensated, and given proper credit for her voice on the track, ‘Black Effect’ from Jay Z and Beyoncé’s joint 2018 album, ‘Everything Is Love.’

In court documents filed on Tuesday, Stines is reportedly suing the American superstar couple for copyright infringement, and violation of her right to publicity, plus damages. Reports are that Dr. Stines also wants writing credits and monetary compensation.

Dr. L’Antoinette Stines who willingly recorded her views for the Carter’s, claims that at the time, she was told it would only be used in the video for promotional purposes but was shocked to hear her voice for an entire minute at the beginning of the song.

The track first caught the attention of many Jamaicans back in 2018, when Dr. Stines’ voice was in fact heard, but her name was not credited on the initial release. Beyonce and Jay Z have since adjusted the credits to include her.

However, L’Antoinette Stines is insisting that although she had signed a contract, it was a same-day contract, and the Carters’ reps told her not to worry because the video would only be used for promotion. She also expressed that as a result of the impromptu time frame, her lawyers at the time did not get to review the document.

Dr. L’Antoinette Stines was among a few creatives who got the chance to become a part of creative work for Beyonce and Jay-Z, after they visited Jamaica in March 2018 to record footage for a music video.
