Sugar Workers Get Notice Pay

by August 7th, 2015

Sugar cane workers at the Golden Grove Sugar Estate began receiving their 14 weeks’ notice pay today (August 07, 2015), as a part of their compensation package agreed to by Seprod.

The workers were informed last month that Seprod would be outsourcing its cane cultivation and harvesting operations.

Approximately 600 workers are affected by the company’s decision.

First Vice President at the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU), which represents some of the workers, Clifton Grant, told IRIE FM News that the process today went smoothly and a majority of the workers got their notice pay.

The process is expected to be complete in a month when workers entitled to redundancy pay, are to receive payments.

Mr Grant says the workers are still very concerned after receiving termination letters, while some are concerned about their payments.

He says however, that these issues are being addressed.
