7-Hour JLP Meeting

by August 7th, 2015

The seven-hour meeting of the executive members of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) adjourned this afternoon (August 07, 2015), to be resumed next week.

It is still unclear what the meeting was about as various JLP members offered differing reasons for the gathering.

As members left one by one, they all declined to give complete statements, saying that the meeting was about election preparation, parliamentary proceedings, and party matters.

Party executive, Derrick Smith labelled the meeting as spirited, declining to provide any opinion on the leadership of the party, and the support of Andrew Holness.

Some delegates expressed disappointment that their leader may have been hiding from them.

This led to a contention involving some delegates and supporters, who blamed the media for the length of time it was taking Mr Holness to leave.

Mr Holness who left in a rush stated that the meeting was to discuss party matters, and it was very heated.

He noted that there was no discussion on his leadership.

Mr Holness was unable to give a definite date as to when the meeting would resume.

Meanwhile, supporters of Andrew Holness gathered in small pockets, to voice their backing for the JLP leader.

The supporters huddled under the shade in the parking lot of the Jamaica Labour Party headquarters on Belmont Road, awaiting news from a meeting of party executives.

The supporters, some of them delegates, say they will not allow their leader to be replaced.

Other smaller gathering of supporters voiced concerns, about what this move will mean for the party, ahead of the next General Election.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Christopher Murdock briefly joined the meeting with a number of officers.

He stated that his purpose was to investigate the reason for the line of vehicles parked outside the JLP headquarters, apparently causing traffic disruption along that thoroughfare.
