Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips is urging the government to embark on a public education campaign, to address the decline in the participation of citizens in political matters.

Dr. Phillips, who was speaking during the swearing in ceremony of Members of Parliament today, noted that the recent general election represents the country’s ability to continue its democratic traditions.

He however lamented that the general election also revealed that over 60 % of the voting population, did not participate in the process.

The Electoral Office reported a 37 % voter turnout a decline from the 48 % in the 2016 general election.

Dr. Phillips added that all political parties should seek to implement ways to revive civic responsibility and duty among citizens in the country.

Dr. Phillips also explained that the notion of voting for monetary benefits poses a concern for democracy.
