Some workers upset over change in NIS deductions which took effect this month

by April 23rd, 2021

A change in the deductions for the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) which took effect April 2021 has not gone down well with some public sector workers.

There has been uproar on social media with some persons complaining about a $4,000 cut in their net pay.

The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) has been made aware of the complaints.

JCTU President Helene Davis White pointed out that the change affects all employees who pay to the NIS not just public sector workers.

Meantime, the JCTU is to respond soon to the government’s proposal for a 2.5 % salary increase, for this fiscal year.

The finance ministry had indicated that due to the need to respond to the Covid pandemic, among other factors, the government would provide a modest increase.

Mrs. Davis White said the matter will be further discussed when negotiations begin.
