It’s not enough. That’s the general sentiment of the Jamaica Accountability Meter Portal (JAMP) to reports that Westmoreland Central Member of Parliament George Wright has resigned from the Jamaica Labour Party.

The JLP announced Wright’s resignation today, in the wake of mounting public pressure for him to step down, due to allegations of abuse levelled against him.

JAMP Executive Director Jeanette Calder said, the concern has always been Wrights continued representation of the people of Jamaica in the lower house, not as a member of a political party.

Ms. Calder said the party has signalled that Wright is not fit for purpose, so the same should apply to his position as an MP.

She said Wright must recognize that the Jamaican public has lost confidence in him.

She also expressed concern that other JLP members were unable to convince Wright to do the right thing.

Meantime, the National Integrity Action (NIA) has renewed its call for legislation that will facilitate the removal of member of parliament from office if the person has brought the office into disrepute.

NIA Principal Director Trevor Munroe was reacting the reports that Central Westmoreland MP George Wright has resigned from the Jamaica Labour Party, but remains the elected representative of the constituency.

Professor Munroe said the public should be told the reasons for the resignation from the party.

He said this latest development in the matter reinforces the need for impeachment processes.
