Bauxite Company Windalco has started the process of cleaning the Rio Cobre, in St. Catherine, after the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) found the company responsible for the effluent spill in the river, causing a fish kill, on Monday (August 2).
The fish kill left residents of communities along the river’s banks upset about the frequency of the spills and the lack of redress for the adverse impacts on health and livelihood.
Speaking with Irie FM News, Senior Manager of Environmental Management at NEPA, Richard Nelson explained that the bauxite company was served with an enforcement notice on Wednesday, which gave instructions to clean the river and its banks, among other things.
In acknowledging Windalco’s statements that it is not accepting liability for the Rio Cobre fish kill, Mr. Nelson said, NEPA is contemplating bringing another lawsuit against Windalco.
