Tropical Storm Fred forms off the coast of Puerto Rico

Tropical Storm Fred formed Tuesday (August 10) night off the coast of Puerto Rico, becoming the sixth named storm of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Fred is located south-southwest of Ponce, Puerto Rico, with sustained winds of 40 miles per hour.

Much of the Caribbean is bracing for the storm as it is expected to continue west near Puerto Rico, then to Hispanola and near Bahamas on Thursday (August 12).

The Met Office says Tropical Storm Fred is not a threat to Jamaica.
