Impact of Tropical Storm Grace to be assessed today

It’s expected that a clearer picture will emerge today (August 18), about the extent of the impact of Tropical Storm Grace.

The tropical storm dumped heavy rain and brought heavy wind, across the island resulting in mainly flooding and some wind damage in some areas.

Up to late yesterday (August 17), residents in flooded areas were urged to move to government shelters.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management says at least three shelters were open, yesterday.

Utility companies – the Jamaica Public Service, National Water Commission and the National Works Agency, are expected to carry out assessments of the damage left by the storm.

The works agency reported yesterday, that some 40 roads were affected by Tropical Storm Grace.

St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, Kingston and St. Andrew and parts of St. Catherine, saw a number of roads being flooded.

Meanwhile, the JPS said some areas had no electricity.

The company says it has started the assessment of the damage to the power delivery network.

The JPS points to damage to its power delivery system in several parishes, including Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, St. Thomas, Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann.

Meanwhile, Corporate Communications Manager at the NWC Andrew Canon, says it will take some time for operations to return to normal, due to turbidity issues.

The National Works Agency, NWA, says it will be placing focus on the drainage system, following the passage of Tropical Storm Grace, yesterday (August 17).

Noting that several roads were impacted by flooding, during the passage of the storm, Communications and Customer Service Manager at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says teams will be looking at drainage structures, to ensure that they are able to withstand heavy flooding.

 

And the National Water Commission, NWC says it will take some time, for water supply to return to normal in areas impacted by Tropical Storm Grace.

NWC reported that a number of its systems across the island were affected by Tropical Storm Grace, resulting in turbidity issues.

Speaking with Irie Fm News Corporate Communication Manager for NWC Andrew Cannon says the company will have to wait until mudslides subside before commencing operations.

He states that efforts will be made to return things to normal in the shortest order.
