PNP calls for health minister’s resignation

by September 2nd, 2021

The Opposition Peoples National Party has called for Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton to resign, over what they deem his failure to adequately manage the Covid pandemic response.

In a statement, the PNP pointed out that 18 months after Jamaica recorded its first case of the novel coronavirus, the country is still without a proper covid-19 management plan.

PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell said during this third and most deadly wave of the pandemic, the ministry of health and wellness failed to meet the needs of hospitals and clinics islandwide.

He cited the situation about poor planning for oxygen supply, as indicative of Dr. Tufton’s, and by extension the government’s failure to exercise the duty of care to Jamaicans.

Dr. Campbell said the crisis could have been avoided and that many covid related deaths were preventable, had the proper measures been put in place.

Dr. Campbell further pointed out that the government must take responsibility for the result of their mishandling of the pandemic, and the minister of health must be held accountable for the poor management of the pandemic.
