Health Ministry confirms presence of Mu variant

Following confirmation that the Mu variant of the Coronavirus is in Jamaica, the health ministry has again implored citizens to do all they can to avoid contracting the disease.

Confirmation of the Mu’s presence in Jamaica, came Thursday evening as Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton gave an update at the COVID Conversations virtual press briefing.

 

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor Mckenzie said the samples that tested positive were taken last month.

Dr. McKenzie explained that the Mu variant is of concern to health officials because early studies indicate the potential for greater immune escape.

Meanwhile,  the Health Minister acknowledged the fear and anxiety the presence of the Mu variant will cause, but said with the movement of travellers, there is always a possibility of more covid variants entering the country.
