Church council seeks clarification from gov’t on rationale for continuation of no movement day restriction on Sundays

by September 22nd, 2021

Citing biblical reference to the philosophy that ‘man shall not live by bread alone’, some of the islands churches have asked the government to clarify, the rationale for seemingly giving economic and business interests superior consideration, while Sundays remain no movement days.

This in the wake of comments by Prime Minster Andrew Holness, that the decision to only have Sundays remain a no movement day, was not based on religious considerations and that Saturdays are economically beneficial to the nation.

The Jamaica Council of Churches, JCC said, clarification is needed against the background that the government should be facilitating greater communication and collaboration with all stakeholders, including the church in the fight against Covid.

JCC President Reverend Newton Dixon noted that many church members are perplexed, as while churches are allowed to facilitate limited gatherings the no movement day restriction hampers their ability to attend church.

Reverend Dixon wants the government to be fair in its decision making.
