Revised National Identification bill now before Parliament

The National Identification bill is once again before parliament, this time in a revised format, following changes in the wake of court action by the Opposition and concern by some interest groups.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck opened the debate on the new National Identification and Registration Act, in the Lower House, yesterday (September 21).

He noted that the new bill features recommendations made by the joint select committee.

Mr. Chuck said the new bill, will among other things, ensure compliance with implementation and protection of, citizens personal information in accordance with international best practices.

In response, Opposition Spokesman Julian Robinson, who had brought the court action against the previous bill under the Peoples National Party, noted the significant changes made to the bill.

He stressed the importance of the data collected for the National Identification System, being protected.

Mr. Robinson also called for the implementation of adequate cyber security.
