T&T confirms case of the new Omicron variant

by December 13th, 2021

Trinidad and Tobago has become the second Caribbean nation to confirm a case of the new Omicron variant of the Coronavirus.

The case comes a week after Bermuda confirmed its first case.

The new Omicron variant of Covid-19 has now been detected in more than 60 countries on six continents.

The variant was the result of an imported case for both Trinidad and Bermuda.

Trinidad’s Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh said today (December 13), that the case was detected in a woman, who travelled from New York, in the United States.

He said the woman allegedly had a positive pcr test, in New York and travelled to Panama, where she boarded the flight with a negative antigen test.

He said the positive pcr test was noted by Port Health in Trinidad and the woman was placed in isolation, where she remains.

The minister said 14 people who were in a two-row radius of the Omicron-positive person during the flight have been contacted, and placed in isolation where they are being monitored.

He noted that they have all returned negative pcr tests, thus far.

Further afield, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says, at least one patient has been confirmed to have died with Omicron in the UK.

This is the first death recorded with that Covid-19 Variant, in the UK.
