A second government-run shelter for female victims of domestic abuse has officially opened.

Gender Minister Olivia Grange cut the ribbon, symbolizing the opening of the facility in the presence of the High Commissioner of Canada, as well as representatives of the European Union Delegation to Jamaica, yesterday (December 15).

Minister Grange said this latest shelter — the second of three being established by her ministry is ready to accept women and their children who have had abusive situations and need protection.

Ms. Grange said the shelter is in a remote location and would focus on housing high risk victims.

She added that counselling will be available.

Any woman who needs the shelter should call the national helpline on 876-553-0372.
