Prime Minister says there is no other sovereign authority in Jamaica

by January 9th, 2022

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared that there is no other sovereign authority in Jamaica, apart from the duly elected political government.

The declaration came in response to a question about the engagement of the government with the maroons and the possibility of his government funding projects in maroon territories.

The maroons say they are a sovereign people.  However, the Prime Minister says Jamaica is a unitary sovereign state.

While he did not directly respond to a question about different arms of the state allegedly granting approval for the hosting of the annual Accompong Maroon celebrations on January 6, the Prime Minister asserted that people have died as a result of certain activities within the Maroon community.

A shooting incident at an event in Accompong on Thursday resulted in the death of Lloyd Davis and the wounding of five persons, including two children aged 6 and 11 years.

The incident which involved an off-duty policeman is being investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM.
