Opposition warns against re-imposition of SOEs

by January 25th, 2022

Amid calls for the re-implementation of States of Public Emergency (SOE’s), General Secretary of the People’s National Party, dr. Dayton Campbell is cautioning against the move.

Several stakeholders have been calling for SOEs to be re-imposed in crime hotspots, following a flare-up of violence.

SOE’s in seven divisions across the island were discontinued in November last year after the opposition refused to support the extension.

The Public Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ) and government Senator Don Wehby are among the stakeholders calling for the re-imposition of the enhanced security measure.

Speaking with Irie FM News, Dr. Campbell warned against the re-imposition of SOEs, noting that it can lead to indefinite detention of people, without them having access to the courts.

Acknowledging that there is a need for a response to the spate of crime and violence in the country, the General Secretary noted that the Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) is the appropriate response.
