Farmers impacted by recent heavy rains to receive assistance from Agriculture Ministry

by February 8th, 2022

Farmers who were impacted by the recent heavy rains in sections of the island are to receive assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Portfolio Minister Pearnel Charles jr. is reporting that the rains caused significant damage to crops and to some extent livestock.

He said while several parishes experienced increased rainfall, St. Ann, St. Mary, and Portland, suffered the most loss in vegetables, condiments, potatoes, pumpkins, poultry and yams.

The Minister said the affected farmers will get as much support as possible while noting that assessments are ongoing in some areas.

Mr. Charles jr noted that extension officers from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) are in the fields doing assessments and will present an extensive report this week.

The Minister also said many of the farm roads have been flooded and that has hindered the assessment teams from completing the work in some areas.

However, he assured that the agency is determined to get the necessary information so that the appropriate response can be made.
