Advocacy Group expresses shock at DPP’s ruling in relation to Nzinga King

by February 10th, 2022

Advocacy Group Stand Up for Jamaica, has expressed shock at the ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP, in relation to the case of young Rastafarian woman, Nzinga King.

Ms. King claimed that her locks were cut by the police while she was at the lock up in Clarendon, last year.

Yesterday (February 9), the DPP Paula Lewellyn said after reviewing the matter, there were several inconsistencies in the claims made by Ms. King and that her claims were not supported by other persons interviewed.

In response, Stand Up for Jamaica said the ruling has triggered outrage, as this represents another incident of discrimination and violation of human rights.

Speaking with Irie FM News, Executive Director of the Group Carla Gullotta cited similar incidents in the past, involving discriminatory behaviour towards Rastafarians.

Among these is the Coral Gardens Massacre in 1963, during which several Rastafarians were detained and their dreadlocks trimmed.

Ms. Gullota questioned if Ms. King has received fair treatment.

She said her group will continue to offer support to Ms. King.
