Leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding, is urging legislators to thoroughly debate the new Firearms Act to ensure its effectiveness upon enactment.

The long awaited firearms act was tabled yesterday (February 10), following the ceremonial opening of Parliament.

The bill is set to go before a joint select committee of Parliament, for deliberation.

Reacting to the tabling of the bill, Mr. Golding said he hopes that upon implementation, it will send a stern message to criminals.

The Opposition Leader said despite the late tabling of the bill, he is glad it has finally been brought forward.

Mr. Golding underscored that the opposition supports the government in fighting against threats facing the nation, as long as it is operating within the confines of the constitution.
