JAS urges farmers to be considerate when pricing onions and irish potatoes

by February 19th, 2022

President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society Lenworth Fulton is urging farmers to be considerate, when pricing onions and irish potatoes.

His appeal follows a recommendation by the Agriculture Ministry that farm gate prices for a pound of onions and irish potatoes, be 90 and 80 dollars respectively.

The recommendation comes against the background of the ongoing price increases across all sectors, including food and agricultural inputs.

Mr. Fulton says he does not believe the prices are unreasonable, but while farmers deserve to make a profit from sale of their goods, they should consider the effects on consumers.

Mr. Fulton is also urging the operators of grocery stores to be considerate in the pricing of goods.
