Labour Minister urges employers to pay workers more than the minimum wage, if possible

Employers who are able to pay, their workers more than the minimum wage are being urged to do so.

Labour Minister Karl Samuda says the minimum wage reflects the lowest level at which workers should be paid.

He announced an increase in the minimum wage, which will move from $7000 to $9,000 per 40 hour work week, effective April 1.

Security Guards will see their wages move from $9,700 to $10,500 per 40 hour work week.

They will also get increases in their allowances.

The Labour Minister however said employers who can pay more should do so, to help workers.
