by February 24th, 2022

As Russia continues its military attack on Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the number of Jamaican students who have left Ukraine has increased to 15.

Yesterday (February 23), the Ministry had reported that 8 of the 42 students pursuing tertiary studies in Ukraine had left the country.

In a release today, the Foreign Ministry said 26 students remain in Ukraine.

25 of them are located in Kharkiv and one is located in L’viv.

According to the Ministry, the Government of Jamaica continues to assist Jamaican students and their families where possible during this period.

The Ministry added that given the situation in Ukraine, Portfolio Minister Kamina Johnson Smith has conferred with her CARICOM colleagues and with other diplomatic partners on the situation.

It said Mrs. Johnson Smith and others will remain alert to any opportunities for safe passage that can be communicated to the students.

Meantime, the Ministry has condemned the military action by Russia against Ukraine.

The Ministry says the attack is a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, particularly the obligation to respect the sovereign rights and the territorial integrity of States.

The Ministry says Jamaica is strongly urging Russia to cease all acts of aggression and to withdraw from Ukrainian territory.
