A study conducted by the Pan American Health Organization, PAHO, found that some 3,000 pregnant women died from Covid-19 in the region, in the past two years.

This, as the Covid-19 pandemic reportedly led to a dramatic increase in mortality for pregnant women globally.

PAHO Director, Dr. Carissa Etienne says Covid had a staggering impact on pregnant women, disrupting pre-natal services and making timely access to health care impossible for some expectant mothers.

She notes that the delta variant in particular affected a large percentage of pregnant women.

Dr. Etienne says many babies were born prematurely due to the impact of Covid-19 on the health sector.
