Government and opposition clash over projected tax revenue for next fiscal year

by March 23rd, 2022

Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke, has chastised the opposition, for erroneously stating, the tax revenue, the government expects to collect, in the next fiscal year.

The opposition had projected, that the government will get $99 billion more.

In closing the budget debate on Tuesday (March 22), Dr Clarke said, this was not so.

He said the correct figure is $65 billion.

Noting that the opposition based its budget projections on wrong data, Dr. Clarke described the logic, as ridiculous.

And, in a quick rebuttal, the opposition People’s National Party, has disputed claims made by the finance minister, that the opposition’s projection for tax revenue, was wrong.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, opposition spokesman on finance Julian Robinson, cited figures in the revenue estimates, which support the projection of $99 billion.

Mr Robinson said, the documents show, that the government plans, to take in tax revenues of $671 billion, for the 22/23 fiscal year.

This is up from $572 billion dollars for the 21/22 fiscal year.

That is an additional 99 billion dollars, which is on page 2 of the document, tabled in parliament.

The opposition is calling on the minister of finance to apologize for misleading the house, and contradicting data from his own ministry.
