Advocates Network wants gov’t to reveal total cost for recent royal visit

by March 31st, 2022

The Advocates Network wants the government to reveal the total cost for the recent royal visit to Jamaica.

Prince William and his wife Catherine visited the country between March 22 and 24.

In a statement today (March 31), the Advocates Network noted that the Office of the Prime Minister had informed that the government would not pay the “full cost” of the royal visit, only related security costs.

However, the group says it witnessed celebrations in Trench Town, visits to a school, a hospital, and a grand dinner at Kings House, noting that many Jamaicans are wondering if there are other related direct and indirect costs – such as transport, telephone, and civil servants’ time.

According to the group, at a time when most Jamaicans are suffering from the fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic and rising prices, it is important to understand how tax dollars were spent.

It adds that, in order to assess the effectiveness of this expenditure, it is important to know the precise benefits of the visit, to the Jamaican people.

Member of the Advocates Network Kay Osborne, indicated that the group has six key questions for the government.

The Advocates Network says hard-working Jamaicans have a right to know exactly how much money the government spent and what was achieved from this spending.

The group has used the Access To Information Act, to find out exactly how much money was spent on the royal visit.

Ms. Osbourne also raised the issue of who should foot the bill for the Governor General’s Office.
