New bridge in Craig Mill Portland to cost gov’t $107M

by March 31st, 2022

Member of Parliament for West Portland Daryl Vaz has pointed out that it will cost government about 107 million dollars to replace the bridge that serves residents of Crraig Mill, Belvedere and Whitehall, in the constituency.

His comments come in the wake of a demonstration by residents, today (March 31).

The current bridge is in a deplorable state and has been closed by the National Works Agency, leaving residents with no suitable alternative route, except for the river bed, which is inaccessible whenever there is heavy rain.

Mr. Vaz expressed disappointment with the approach taken by the residents, who blocked a section of the Buff Bay main road, this morning.

The MP said a bridge replacement cannot be done overnight, and that the relevant authorities are awaiting the allocation of funds for the project, in the new fiscal year.

He said arrangements will be made for travellers, who are inconvenienced whenever the river is in spate.
