JTA President says he will not allow politics to control selection of school boards

by April 4th, 2022

President of the Jamaica Teachers Association, JTA, Winston Smith says he will not sit by and allow politics to determine how persons are appointed to school boards.

His comment follows reports that a member of parliament had recommended four individuals for a school board and the recommendation was endorsed by the National Council on Education (NCE) and then approved by Education Minister, Fayval Williams.

Their appointments took effect on April 1.

Persons have reportedly taken issue with the move.

Speaking at the JTA’s 58th anniversary church service at Mizpah in Manchester, on Sunday, Mr. Smith warned that the JTA will not tolerate such moves.

Meanwhile, Mr. Smith said he is hoping that reports of plans to dissolve the NCE are not true.

He told Irie Fm news that the JTA will not support such a move.
