Citizens reminded not to fish in protected areas following arrest of man

by April 22nd, 2022

Citizens are being reminded that fishing is not allowed in areas designated as sanctuaries, and that if caught breaching the fisheries act, they face being fined up to $3 million, or imprisoned for 2 years.

The reminder comes in the wake of the arrest of a man, who was caught fishing illegally, in the White River fish sanctuary, on the St Ann / St Mary border, earlier in April.

Sanctuary manager, Reanne Mckenzie told Irie FM news, that the perpetrator, is a repeat offender.

Ms. Mckenzie explained that the White iver fish sanctuary, covers the area, from Hermosa cove in St. Ann, to prospect in St. Mary, and is clearly marked.

She said the sanctuary continues to get support from legitimate fisher folk, who help to protect the area.
