UPDATE: Dispute between NWC and Unions representing its workers remains unsettled after ten hours of negotiations; discussions to continue today

by May 11th, 2022

After ten hours of continued conciliatory negotiations at the Ministry of Labour yesterday (May 10), the dispute between the National Water Commission and the Unions representing its workers remains unsettled.

The Ministry and the Unions were locked in a discussion up to late last night, trying to resolve issues, which led to yesterday’s strike.

Some two thousand NWC workers took industrial action to register their anger about an outstanding reclassification exercise. They also have concerns about the ongoing Public Sector Compensation Review.

It has been reported that about five hundred thousand NWC customers had their water supply disrupted.

In a bid to remedy the issues, an emergency meeting was called with the relevant stakeholders, yesterday afternoon.

In a statement, however, the Labour Ministry noted that the matter remains unresolved.

It noted that the parties have agreed to resume discussions at 10 AM today, at the Ministry’s office on North Street in Kingston.

Yesterday, Labour Minister Karl Samuda said water supply was restored to a great degree, however, some customers are still without the commodity. Some schools have chosen to do online classes today as many customers remain without water.
