Jamaica has confirmed its first case of monkeypox.

Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton made the announcement during an emergency press briefing this afternoon (July 6).

The disease was detected in Clarendon, in a male who recently travelled to the island from the United Kingdom.

Dr. Tufton said the patient is in isolation.

Dr. Tufton is urging citizens not to panic.

Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, back and muscle pain and the formation of lesions and skin rashes.

Dr. Tufton said persons displaying symptoms should call ahead before seeking medical attention.

He said a review is being done to assess the country’s isolation capacity to manage both COVID-19 and monkeypox.
