Virologist urges Jamaica to prepare for more cases of Monkeypox

by July 11th, 2022

Virologist Dr Sandra Jackson says Jamaica should prepare for more cases of Monkeypox.

This, after the country confirmed its first imported case of the disease last week.

The patient who travelled from the United Kingdom(UK), is in isolation at a facility in Clarendon.

Speaking on the Africa Forum on Irie Fm on Sunday Dr Jackson noted that given the pattern of the disease in other countries, it is highly likely that Jamaica will record more cases.

She noted that older persons who received the smallpox vaccine may have some immunity against Monkeypox.

However, she added that vaccine immunity wanes over time so people who are vaccinated against smallpox may still be susceptible to Monkeypox.
