Prime Minister Andrew Holness says there is need for political consensus to address the violence plaguing the society.

He says while violence is rife, this can be overcome if the leadership of society is willing to come to a consensus on the issue.

Mr. Holness says violence is creating an existential threat, that could cause the society to collapse.

According to him, the country has the capacity to deal with social violence in a meaningful way.

He acknowledges that the government and opposition have not reached what he called, genuine consensus on how to tackle crime.

Speaking today (August 11), at the first public presentation of the National Commission on Violence Prevention, also attended by Opposition Member Peter Bunting, Mr. Holness urged the opposition to share in the victory of overcoming violence.

The Prime Minister added that greater attention must be placed on enforcement, to ensure that violence is minimized.
