Opposition says third local monkeypox case indicates more cases are going undetected

by August 30th, 2022

Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Morais Guy says the confirmation of a third locally transmitted case of monkeypox, shows that there are some cases in the population that remain undetected.

Yesterday, the Health Ministry revealed that Jamaica recorded a fifth monkeypox case, last week. It said the patient is a male from Kingston and St. Andrew.

St. James, St. Elizabeth, and Clarendon have also recorded cases of the virus.

The Ministry said it was conducting contact tracing in an effort to prevent further spread.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, Dr. Guy said a third locally transmitted case means that some cases are not being identified.

Noting that the country’s borders remain open to visitors, Dr. Guy urged citizens to be vigilant.

He said people with symptoms should report them.
