Chief Justice Bryan Sykes says the time has come for the country’s judges to hone their skills and knowledge so that they can specialize in a specific area of law.

Chief Justice Sykes notes that while judges may wish to be exposed to all areas of law, the reality is that all judges cannot achieve the required standard of competence in all areas.

Therefore, he says there must be some sort of specialization for the nation’s judges.

Chief Justice Sykes explains that while internal discussions must be conducted on how the specialization will be implemented, it is clear that the current method of assigning cases to judges cannot continue.

Chief Justice Sykes was speaking at a ceremony for the swearing-in of puisne judges and masters -in- chambers, at King’s house yesterday (January 6).
