An audit has reportedly found that motor trucks are contributing to the high number of crashes at the Mammee round-about, in St. Ann.

Several crashes, involving mostly trucks, have occurred at the location since its construction.

The latest crash occurred this morning.

At least one person has been hospitalized, after a truck laden with goods overturned in a gully, shortly before 10:00 a.m.

It is not clear if the man was the driver of the truck.

His condition is not known.

The crash resulted in traffic pile-up and chaos along the corridor.

Responding to questions about the safety of the roundabout at a road safety seminar this afternoon, manager of transportation engineering at SJE Consultants Limited, Stephanie Bromfield said a road safety audit showed that trucks are a key feature in the accidents in the area.

She said the audit was conducted by the National Road Operating and Constructing Company (NROCC).

Ms. Bromfield said several initiatives are being undertaken to address the issue.

In the meantime, the police public safety and traffic enforcement branch is reminding truck drivers, exiting the north-south highway at the roundabout, to reduce their speed and yield.
