Three Police Constables who were convicted of manslaughter following the fatal shooting of Immaculate High School student, 16-year-old Vanessa Kirkland, were freed by the Court of Appeal.

Constables Andrewain Smith, Durvin Hayles and Anna Kay Bailey had their convictions quashed and sentences set aside today.

In 2019, they were each sentenced to 14 years and six months’ imprisonment, for Kirkland’s death which occurred in March 2012 on Norman Lane, in Kingston.

The teen was among passengers travelling in a motorcar to a party when the incident took place.

The constables had maintained that they were acting in self defence as they were fired on by men in the vehicle which prompted them to return gunfire.
