UPDATE: Public school teachers in at least three parishes have so far taken industrial action over protracted wage issues

by May 25th, 2023

Public school teachers in at least three parishes have taken industrial action over protracted wage issues this morning (May 25).

IRIE FM news understands that teachers of the Cedar Grove High School in Portmore, St Catherine, the Alpha Infant School in Kingston and the BB Coke High School in St Elizabeth have refrained from the classrooms.

Yesterday, the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) said schools in at least seven parishes will be impacted.

These are Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Manchester, Clarendon, St. Catherine, St. Thomas, Kingston and St. Andrew.

JTA President La Sonja Harrison said the decision was made by the membership who voted on the action yesterday.

The industrial action is intended to highlight teachers’ dissatisfaction with how matters relating to their salary are being handled by the Government.

More updates to come.
