by January 29th, 2017

A police sergeant was shot in the head, after responding to reports of the murder of a security guard and the wounding of two men in Fletcher’s Land, Kingston last night.

The security guard has been identified as 39-year-old Asfidel Harrison of Mahoe Drive, Bridgeport,  ST Catherine and Seaview Gardens, Kingston 11.

Reports are that about 11:06 p.m., Harrison was operating a taxi along King Street, Downtown,  when a man posing as a passenger pulled a firearm and attempted to rob him.

Harrison, a licensed firearm holder, pulled his firearm and challenged the gunman. Both men received gunshot wounds. Harrison then drove to  hospital where he died  while undergoing treatment.

Police say the cronies of the gunman, who were travelling behind Harrison’s vehicle in a BMW motorcar attempted to pick up the wounded  gunman who attempted to escape.

However, the police who arrived on the scene thwarted that attempt. A team of officers from the Hunts Bay Police Station intercepted the vehicle on Tower Avenue in Kingston 11 where a shoot out ensued.

During the incident the police sergeant was shot in the head and was taken to hospital where he is admitted in critical condition.

One occupant of the BMW motorcar was taken into custody and will be questioned in the presence of his attorney with a view of proffering charges. The other occupant abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

The alleged gunman and a bystander who were shot during the earlier melee were taken to hospital where they were admitted in stable condition. One pistol along with a magazine containing eight 9mm rounds was also found on the scene.

The police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist in the investigations of these incidents to contact the Hunts Bay Police at 923-7111, Kingston Central Police at 922-5076, Olympic Gardens police at 923-5468, police 119 emergency number, Crime Stop at 311 or via the Stay Alert App.
