Cop freed of murder of pregnant woman

A policeman who was charged with the murder of a pregnant woman in St. Thomas nearly five years ago, has been freed.

Corporal Dwayne Smart was freed by a Home Circuit Court jury, of the murder of 27-year-old Kay Ann Lamont.

She was eight months pregnant when she was shot in September 2012.

The crown led evidence that smart fatally shot Lamont following a tussle after he accosted her for using expletives.

The incident took place in Yallahs, St. Thomas and Lamont died from gunshot wounds to the head.

Residents had protested her death.

Lamont’s sister was also shot and wounded in the shoulder during the incident.

The seven member jury which deliberated for close to four hours, found smart not guilty of the charges of murder and wounding with intent.
