Govt expedites review of over 600 legislation, to update penalties

by May 2nd, 2017

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says that the government is expediting the review of some 600 pieces of legislation, to bring penalties up to date.

Concerns were raised about the fines charged for certain offences, after alleged gang leader Tesha Miller was charged a maximum fine of $100, for making a false declaration to Jamaican immigration officials.

Mr. Chuck says, a programme is being executed by the Legal Reform Department of the Justice Ministry to review and repeal 600 pieces of legislation with out-dated fines.

The Justice Minister says many of the laws have never been changed and many still have imperial measures, which should have been changed decades ago.

He was making his contribution to the sectoral debate in parliament this afternoon (May 2).
